There is a ton of info out there on how to best maintain your HVAC system. Between scheduling routine maintenance, changing filters or buying new equipment, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. Don’t worry about it, we’re busting some of the most common HVAC myths to help keep you comfortable and your HVAC system working in order.

HVAC Myths

HVAC MYTH 1: Turning your AC off when you leave the house is a waste of energy.
REALITY 1: It’s common to hear that leaving your AC set to a higher temperature during the day is more efficient than turning it off. In reality, it always saves more energy to shut your system off when you are not using it.

HVAC MYTH 2: You only have to change the filter once a year.
REALITY 2: A dirty filter clogs the system and reduces airflow. Clean or change your filter every few months or monthly during the summer.

HVAC MYTH 3: The bigger the HVAC system the better.
REALITY 3: Get the system that is right for your home, not necessarily the biggest one will be better for you. When it’s bigger than what you need it will keep cycling on and off – which costs more money to operate and shortens the unit’s life.

HVAC MYTH 4: Close the vents in empty rooms to increase energy efficiency.
REALITY 4: Closing vents can increase air pressure in the ducts, causing leaks at the vent seams.

HVAC MYTH 5: Your thermostat’s location doesn’t affect heating and cooling.
REALITY 5: It does affect. Putting your thermostat too close to vents, radiators or windows, can make the system shut down prematurely or keep it running for too long.

HVAC MYTH 6: I don’t need routine maintenance.
REALITY 6: The same way you check your car every year, your HVAC also needs your attention. Checking it can save you from major problems down the line.

HVAC MYTHS 7: An energy-efficient unit will automatically reduce my bill.
REALITY 7: It’s a good start but not enough. If you’ve got leaky window seals and poor insulation, the HVAC equipment won’t be very effective.
